SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL (BY HANNAH AND KAREN)

One type of sideways stories from wayside school.

                               

This is Wayside school.

                                         

This book contains thirty stories about the children and teachers at Wayside School, but before we get to them, there is something you have to know so that you don't get confused.

this is another sideways stories. 
Wayside School was accidentally built sideways. It was supposed to be only one story high, with thirty classrooms all in a row. Instead it is thirty stories high, with one classroom on each story. The builder said he was very sorry.

The children at Wayside like having a sideways school. They have an extra-large playground. The children and teachers described in this book are on the top floor classrooms.

It has been said that these stories are strange and silly and that they may probably be true.

Japan By: (Hannah and Elaina)

Hi everybody, today we will teach you about Japan.


Where is Japan?


Japan is in  Eastern Asia. Japan is made of thousands of islands. It is near the Sea of Japan. It is also near the Pacific Ocean in the east. Across this sea are Japan's closest neighbors. They include Russia, China, North Korea, and South Korea. The capital is Tokyo.




The Land


Most of Japan is covered in mountains. Most of Japan's cities and farms lie on these plains. Short, fast-moving rivers flow from the mountains to plains. They provide farmers with water for growing crops. The Japanese enjoy four seasons. Northern Japan has cool summers and cold, snowy winters. The southern part of the country has long, hot summers and mild winters. 



Volcanoes and Earthquakes

Japan lies in an area where the earth's crust cracks and slides. This constant movement creates volcanoes and earthquakes. About 60 of Japan's 150 volcanoes are active. They puff out steam, smoke, and ash. Most earthquakes in Japan are small and do not cause much damage. Large earthquakes strike every few years and can cause landslides and damage to buildings. An earthquake on the ocean floor is dangerous too. It can cause a powerful wave called a tsunami. A tsunami becomes a giant wall of water when it reaches land.



Wildlife

Japan is home to many plants and animals. Bears, deer, foxes, and rabbits all live in the forest. Cherry blossoms are popular in Japan.



The People

The people in Japan are Japanese. That is why they are called Japanese people. Japanese is also their language.



Holidays

Japan celebrates many different holidays. The holidays are Doll Festival, Mid-Summer Festival, and more.

Code Talkers (by: Feynman and Hannah)

 In war two they use many codes to send secret messages that people don't know. The name Code Talkers is strongly associated bilingual Navajo speakers specially recruited during World War II by the marines to serve in their standard communications units in the Pacific Theater. Code talking, however, was pioneered by Cherokee and Choctaw Indians during World War II. Other Native Americans code talkers were deployed by the United States Army during World War II, including Lakota, Meskwaki, and Comanche soldiers. Soldiers of Basque ancestry were also used for code talking by the U.S Marines during World War II in other areas where other Basque speakers were not expected to be operating.

Assiniboine Code Talkers
 Members of the Assiniboine served as code talkers during World War II, utilizing the Assiniboine language to encrypt communications. The code talkers included Gilbert Horn Sr., who grew up in the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation of Montana and later became a tribal judge and politician.

Cherokee Code Talkers
 The first known use of Native Americans in the American military to transmit messages under fire was a group of Cherokee troops used by the American 30th Infantry Division serving alongside the British during the Second Battle of the Somme. According to the Division Signal Officer, this took place in September 1918. Their unit was under British command at the time.

Choctaw Code Talkers
 During World War I, company commander Captain Lawrence of the U.S. Army overheard Solomon Louis and Mitchell Bobb conversing in the Choctaw language. He found eight Choctaw men in the battalion. Eventually, fourteen Choctaw men in the Army's 36th Infantry Division trained to use their language in code. They helped the American Expeditionary Forces win several key battles in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, during the final large German push of the war. Within 24 hours of the Choctaw language being pressed into service, the tide of the battle had turned. In less than 72 hours, the Germans were retreating and the Allies were in full attack. These soldiers are now known as the Choctaw code talkers.

Comanche Code Talkers
Adolf Hitler knew about the successful use of code talkers during World War I. He sent a team of some thirty anthropologists to the United States to learn Native American languages before the outbreak of World War II. It proved too difficult for them to learn the many languages and dialects that existed. Because of Nazi German anthropologists' efforts to learn the languages, the U.S. Army did not implement a large-scale code talker program in the European Theater of the war. Fourteen Comanche code talkers did take part in the Invasion of Normandy, and continued to serve in the 4th Infantry Division during additional European operations. Comanche of the 4th Signal Company compiled a vocabulary of over 100 code terms using words or phrases in their own language. Using a substitution method similar to the Navajo, the Comanche code word for tank was "turtle", bomber was "pregnant airplane", machine gun was "sewing machine" and Adolf Hitler was referred to as "crazy white man". Two Comanche code-talkers were assigned to each regiment, the rest to 4th Infantry Division headquarters. Shortly after landing on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, the Comanche began transmitting messages. Some were wounded but none killed.
In 1989, the French government awarded the Comanche code-talkers the Chevalier of the National Order of Merit. On November 30, 1999, the United States Department of Defense presented Charles Chibitty with the Knowlton Award.

Meskwaki Code Talkers
 Meskwaki men used their language against the Germans while fighting in the US Army in North Africa. Twenty-seven Meskwaki, then 16% of Iowa's Meskwaki population (Total population was one hundred sixty eight), enlisted in the U.S. Army together in January 1941.


Basque Code Talkers
 In May 1942, upon meeting about 60 U.S. Marines of Basque ancestry in a San Francisco camp, Captain Frank D. Carranza conceived the idea of using the Basque language for codes. His superiors were wary as there were known settlements of Basque in the Pacific region. There were 35 Basque Jesuits in Hiroshima, led by Pedro Arrupe. In China and the Philippines, there was a colony of Basque jai alai players, and there were Basque supporters of Falange in Asia. The American Basque code talkers were kept away from these theaters; they were initially used in tests and in transmitting logistic information for Hawaii and Australia.
On August 1, 1942, Lieutenants Nemesio Aguirre, Fernández Bakaicoa and Juanna received a Basque-coded message from San Diego for Admiral Chester Nimitz, warning him of the upcoming Operation Apple to remove the Japanese from the Solomon Islands. They also translated the start date, August 7, for the attack on Guadalcanal. As the war extended over the Pacific, there was a shortage of Basque speakers and the US military came to prefer the parallel program based on the use of Navajo speakers.




Navajo Code Talkers
A codebook was developed to teach the many relevant words and concepts to new initiates. The text was for classroom purposes only, and was never to be taken into the field. The code talkers memorized all these variations and practiced their rapid use under stressful conditions during training. Uninitiated Navajo speakers would have no idea what the code talkers' messages meant; they would hear only truncated and disjointed strings of individual, unrelated nouns and verbs.
The Navajo code talkers were commended for their skill, speed, and accuracy demonstrated throughout the war. At the Battle of Iwo Jima, Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. These six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Connor later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima."
As the war progressed, additional code words were added on and incorporated program-wide. In other instances, informal short-cut code words were devised for a particular military campaign

  and not disseminated beyond the area of operation. To ensure a consistent use of code terminologies throughout the Pacific Theater, representative code talkers of each of the U.S. Marine divisions met in Hawaii to discuss shortcomings in the code, incorporate new terms into the system, and update their codebooks. These representatives in turn trained other code talkers who could not attend the meeting. For example, the Navajo word for buzzard, jeeshóóʼ, was used for bomber, while the code word used for submarine, béésh łóóʼ, meant iron fish in Navajo. The last of the original 29 Navajo code talkers who developed the code, Chester Nez, died on June 4, 2014.
The deployment of the Navajo code talkers continued through the Korean War and after, until it was ended early in the Vietnam War. The Navajo code is the only spoken military code never to have been deciphered.

Chinese New Year by Hannah


Hi! If you read this whole blog you will answer a joke in the last sentence. 
Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China. Red is the lucky color in China. In Chinese New Year, people give red envelopes to children. Parents get the most envelopes because they are married. People also dressed up as dragons in Chinese New Year. Dragons are also lucky. 

Story: Long, long time ago China had bad spirits so some men brought red things so they could scare away the bad spirits. In the red envelopes there is money. People also eats special foods such as rice, chicken, fish, meats, and eggs. People also have red lanterns in many stores. 

Joke:Why do parents get more money than kids?

Volcanoes by Hannah

Hi! Today I am teaching you about volcano. A "Ring of Fire" goes around the Pacific Ocean. The "Ring of Fire" is an imaginary circle. It goes along the coast of North America down from the state of Alaska to the country of Mexico. On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, it runs north through the countries of New Zealand, Philippines, and Japan. This "Ring of Fire" gets its name from lava that comes up from deep in the ground along this ring. More than half of the world's volcanoes are inside this ring. Thousands of earthquakes shake the ground each year inside the "Ring of Fire". The land around the "Ring of Fire" changes all the time. Large mountains form over millions of years. Volcanoes and earthquakes along the "Ring of Fire" kill people and destroy many things. Scientists watched a volcano form for the first time in 1943. It happened near the village of Paricutín west of Mexico City. Farmers in Paricutin saw some strange things happening. First, they felt heat come up from the fields. Then they saw a crack, or opening, in the ground. Steam and rocks came out of the crack.  lava and ash came out too. The ash and rocks made a hill that looked like a cone. Finally, the cone became a mountain that was more than 1,300 feet tall. The Paricutin volcano continued to erupt until 1952. It destroy the farmers fields and the town. There had been many earthquakes in the area before the first eruption in 1943. Mount St. Helens Volcano, in Washington State, had been inactive for 123 years. Then, in march 1980, the area was shaken by a series of small earthquakes. Steam rose from the mountain. A huge bulge formed on its side. Scientists recognized the signs of an upcoming eruption. People were warned to evacuate. Unfortunately, not everyone listened.bye!
